Family movie night is back on, thanks to Walmart! The retail giant will be converting portions of its sprawling parking lots into drive-in theaters at 160 locations across the nation.
From Aug. 14 to Oct. 21, there will be 320 free — yes, free — screenings of popular, family-friendly films, including “Space Jam,” “Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse,” “The Lego Movie,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Ghostbusters,” “Wonder Woman,” “Black Panther” and more. The movie list was curated by the Tribeca Film Festival.
“We recognize the challenges our customers and their families have faced over the last few months, and we wanted to create an experience where they could come together safely to create new memories,” Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer, said in a press release.
Showings will be held in 26 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.
While there is no charge for tickets, they must be requested in advance. Space is limited due to parking lot capacity, and cars will be spaced apart to accommodate social distancing.
Visit TheWalmartDriveIn.com to find out which showings will take place near you and to reserve tickets. When you sign up you’ll be sent an email with a QR code that will grant you entry to the movie showing.
Each screening starts at 7:30 p.m. on the night of the event, but gates open at 6:00 p.m. Late entry is not allowed, so be sure to arrive before the show begins.
Here are six ways to have a blast at a drive-in movie theater.
Moviegoers can use Walmart’s pickup service to purchase snacks and beverages. Alcohol, however, is prohibited. Anyone who leaves their cars during the event is required to wear a face mask.
The movie screenings will be hosted virtually by actress Drew Barrymore and will include a short film showing before the main event. At select locations, there will be surprise celebrity appearances — either virtually or in person. Barrymore will also make an in-person appearance at one of the events.
